Wedding Cakes
Our wedding cakes were very special at our wedding reception on June 25, 2022. Kirke and I are both HUGE baseball fans and that includes both college and pro as well as minor league teams.
For professional baseball, she is a St Louis Cardinals fan and I am an Atlanta Braves fan.
Her great grandfather was Frank Talmadge “Dixie Davis”, who pitched for the St Louis Browns from 1920-1926. Davis appeared in 239 games during is 10 year career with a 75-71 record. He had a career ERA of 3.97 with over 1,318 innings pitched. He gave up 1,311 hits with 63 of those home runs.
I give her a hard time and tell her she should be a Baltimore Orioles fan since that is where the Browns franchise ended up. However, her grandmother lived in St. Louis and that was home for so many years so she continues to cheer for them to this day.
I grew up an Atlanta Braves fan. When Ted Turner brought WTBS to our household, I would park myself in front of the TV every night at 7:35 to hear Skip Cary do the play by play. I lived through horrible seasons with Bob Horner playing third base and dad even took me to a few games here and there.
In addition, we have college affiliations. I grew up a Florida State fan and went to Oklahoma for my freshman year and she has always been a University of North Carolina fan because of her daddy. They would sit and watch Carolina Basketball and listen to Woody Durham broadcast the games.
As a result, rather than have a traditional wedding cake, we decided to have 5 cakes, one each with the logos of our favorite teams.
The Cardinals and Braves cakes with the largest and the college teams each a bit smaller.
One of our friends, Betsy Wilson, did the decorations for the cake table and you can see the results.
This was just another example of how we made the wedding ours.
